Choosing a cause for Valentine’s Day was easy; I went right to the one everyone is currently ignoring. The plight of homelessness has always been in the back of my mind, especially as of late because there are so many of them. You might wonder how this happened, and of course, if you look back in time you will see it all began with one word: deinstitutionalization. This was done by the federal, and state governments across the country, and the consequences of this action have had vast repercussions ever since. And that is just part of the problem, add in the lack of housing for our returning Veterans, something the government also used to supply years ago, think Stuyvesant…

I find myself swept up in it all, the excitement, the stress, the unknown…that’s how it feels as I move day by day trying to create something that I can be proud of, and that people will enjoy.  You know how they say food is the key to a man’s heart, well a good dessert is the path to everyone’s sweet tooth. I love what I do now each day, be it baking, selling or washing the pans because I am doing something that’s mine, and I can share my experiences with complete strangers, and people I know. Grandma's Cheesecake Sandwiches is busy getting our first retail store

I just want to share with you a little. I spent the day weeding and planting flowers out back behind our new retail location, so it looks pretty for our opening.

Which is still a good 6-10 weeks away. Lots to do. The biggest part is getting all the equipment in place and setting up the kitchen. It’s fun and exciting and rewarding to see it come to life a little more each day. Just wish my grandmother, Raphaella was around to see what’s become of her recipe. Soon we’ll also be in some well known stores and supermarkets. I can’t wait. And the best part of my job now is all the taste testing I get to do on every batch to make sure the flavor is spot on.

We’ll be hiring staff now too to help out, which will take some of the pressure off. Running a business all by yourself is hard work, always something new right around the corner when you think you’ve got it all done. I like it though, I think I finally found something I can really sink my teeth into, no pun intended. So stay with me, and I will keep you all updated as we progress toward our opening, which is looking like mid-July if we stay on schedule.

Happy eating.

Valentine's Day 2019 – Grandma's Cheesecake Sandwiches

Lisa Cotoggio, Founder of Grandma’s Cheesecake Sandwiches decided to give back this year and spend Valentine’s Day 2019 on the streets of Long Island and Manhattan handing out heart-shaped Grandma’s Cheesecake Sandwiches to the homeless residents who live among us.

“To say it was the most rewarding experience I have ever had would be an understatement given the look on the many faces I had the opportunity to encounter. The smiles at the mention of receiving a Valentine’s Day treat could have lit a room for days. These people, and people they are, which we forget sometimes were so happy to interact because it made them feel recognized even if just for the passing moment.

Everyday they stand invisible to the rest of the world as people walk by them on the street, ignoring their pleas for help, pretending they are not there. I can only imagine it is a horrible way to feel. To exist, and know you matter to absolutely no one. These people are just like us; they’ve had parents and grandparents, siblings and children, friends and former co-workers. They weren’t always homeless. They’ve fallen on hard times, and that could happen to anyone.

I’m glad I was able to brighten their spirits for those brief moments because they know there are people out there that do care, and while we can’t all help everyone, we can remember its nice to feel a connection to those around us. It doesn’t cost anything to be kind during our daily movements, so next time you encounter someone down on their luck say hello, and smile, it makes the world of difference to that other person.”

Happy Father's Day from Grandma's Cheesecake Sandwiches

At Grandma’s Cheesecake Sandwiches, we’re all about spreading joy and celebrating every holiday to the fullest. But have you ever stopped to wonder why Father’s Day seems to be getting the short end of the stick compared to Mother’s Day? Let’s jump into the facts without jumping to conclusions!

Look at the numbers: in 2023, a whopping $35.7 billion was splurged on gifts for dear old Mom, while Dad received a still impressive but noticeably smaller $22.9 billion. That’s quite the difference, isn’t it?

Now, let’s rewind a bit and look at the history. Father’s Day emerged during the hard times of the Great Depression and gained even more traction during World War II. It was a clever marketing move by struggling stores to encourage people to spend a little extra on Dad.

Meanwhile, Mother’s Day had already been declared an official holiday way back in 1914, a whole six decades earlier! It wasn’t until 1972 that Father’s Day finally got its spot on the calendar, the third Sunday of June, thanks to President Richard Nixon.

But hey, let’s not forget the real heroes here – our dads! They’re the ones helping us grow, teaching us life lessons, and keeping the family ship sailing smoothly. So why is it that Mother’s Day seems to take center stage while Father’s Day plays the understudy?

Our best guess is that it’s all about tradition. Moms often take the lead in holiday planning, creating elaborate celebrations filled with love and attention to detail. Dads, being the laid-back superheroes they are, might not mind playing second fiddle.

But let’s mix it up this year! Let’s give Dad the spotlight he deserves! Whether it’s grilling up his favorite meal or challenging him to a friendly game of catch, let’s make Father’s Day a day to remember!

At Grandma’s Cheesecake Sandwiches, we believe in giving both moms and dads their moment in the spotlight. After all, who doesn’t love cheesecake, right? So why not show your dad some love and appreciation this Father’s Day? Trust us, he’ll appreciate a delicious cheesecake sandwich just as much as Mom would!

We’re wishing all dads a happy Father’s Day from Grandma’s Cheesecake Sandwiches!

Nostalgia in a Gift Basket at Grandma's Cheesecake Sandwiches

Obviously, I’m a sucker for nostalgia. I’ve built a whole business around sharing one singular taste of my grandmother Raphaella’s famous cheesecake, brought into the modern world in the form of a handheld, easy to eat yet deeply, soul satisfying cheesecake sandwich.

One foot in the past, one foot in the future. That’s me.

I think about this, sometimes, when I have a rare moment to catch my breath, in the midst of the industrial ovens of my Whitestone, New York commercial kitchen, surrounded by freezers, stacks of molds, giant cases of cream cheese, enveloped in the rich sweet smell of melting chocolate and baked butter and sugar, the tang of fresh cut fruit and the base note of cardboard from palettes of packing materials waiting to take the taste of my grandmother’s kitchen out to the world; via UPS from Goldbelly or grabbed on the fly at LaGuardia Airport.

And I wonder, What would my grandmother Raphaella think of all this?

And this thought makes me smile; because my grandmother wouldn’t be surprised at all. She knew that what was good yesterday is good today. And it’ll be good tomorrow, and the day after. Her cheesecake recipe, once perfected, never changed. It was constant, and it was constantly delicious and for that reason, deeply comforting.

I found myself thinking about this the other day, when I was at my neighborhood corner shop and found myself staring at the candy bars. I know. Even I asked myself, Why was I staring at the candy bars? The guy behind me was getting impatient, shaking his keys and muttering.

And the answer was simple. Candy really hasn’t changed. We grew up with Hershey’s chocolate bars and Charleston Chews and Red Hots and Lemonheads and Sugar Babies. And they’re still here, just the same explosion of happiness in your mouth that can take you right back to the best bits of childhood.

And what’s so interesting to me, as I stood there, looking at the candy, is Hersheys and Mars, those were family businesses that started with a family recipe and became iconic candies bringing joy to millions of children over the generations.

The lucky ones of us grew up with a grandparent or older relative who knew how to reach the heart of a kid and always had candy in their pocket they would magically proffer when Mom or Dad weren’t looking. It was a simple consistent act of love and continuity, and one taste is capable of taking you right back to that feeling of love.

That’s nostalgia.

I gave Mr. Impatient my place in line, and I took a moment and I picked out a selection of candy bars, and I created these baskets to share that feeling, along with, of course, a curated selection of Grandma’s Cheesecake Sandwiches to complete the experience, and because I always like to include something the recipient can share with others in our gift baskets, a full size of our madly popular Funfetti Loaf Cake.

Perfect for anyone who is celebrating a milestone, a family reunion, or any time you want to send love in a basket, I’ve created a unique gift that will convey sweetness, happiness, and comfort.

I hope you enjoy giving these baskets. Even more, I hope you are one of the lucky ones who gets one!
